Job Title: Cosmetology Instructor

Position Purpose:
Work in partnership with the Clinic Floor Instructor Team and under the direction of the Chief Academic Officer. Provide guidance and instruction to students on the clinic floor. Provide classroom instruction in the advanced phase of the cosmetology curriculum.

In addition to classroom and clinic floor instruction, perform duties such as maintenance of records required by the California Bureau of Private Postsecondary Education, the California Board of Barbering and Cosmetology, the U.S. Department of Education and NACCAS. Deal with a diverse group of students as well as internal team members at all levels of the organization.

  • Utilize clinic floor processes according to Institute guidelines and timeframes.
  • Execute Aveda curriculum initiatives in course curriculum and service cycle on the clinic floor.
  • Prepare curriculum and lesson plans in advance utilizing 4MAT.
  • Ensure that material being taught reflects current standards within the industry, i.e., preparation and research.
  • Comply with all NACCAS accreditation standards and criteria, and State Board regulations.
  • Comply with all federal and state laws and regulations.
  • Maintain academic records consistent with Institute guidelines; ensure continuous evaluation is given to students on an on-going basis, i.e., performance in theory, practical, and clinic floor experiences.
  • Continually check with students for understanding of subject matter and adjust teaching methods to ensure all students are active participants.
  • Coach cosmetology students to meet service and retail goals utilizing Aveda time management methods.
  • Ensure safe and sanitary practices by students when practicing or demonstrating on the clinic floor.
  • Address student challenges in an effective and timely manner.
  • Continuously work at creating and nurturing strong working relationships with other teams.
  • Project a professional image at all times to internal and external clients.
  • Ensure that students comply with Institute set directives.
  • Comply with the Institute Instructor Code of Conduct Guidelines.
  • Encourage participation from team members, guests and students in all Institute events.
  • Follow and help implement all Aveda brand visual presentation standards and guidelines.
  • Enforce policies and procedures of the Institute; serve as a role model.
  • Present and reinforce a professional appearance and maintain Company’s appearance and dress code standard at all times.
  • Ensure that all waste materials are recycled in a proper fashion as dictated by local laws and Company guidelines.
  • Interface effectively and collaborate with peers and management to successfully meet shifting needs.
  • Actively participate in meetings and trainings.
  • Effectively educate students and guests about product knowledge.
  • Actively contribute to a cohesive, cooperative work environment.
  • Maintain all safety and security standards and identify and communicate potential problem issues/challenges.
  • Enforce policies and procedures set forth in the Aveda Institute Los Angeles Student Handbook.
  • Counsel and assist students in resolving issues.
  • Actively participate in Institute events (Quarterly Celebrations, Earth Jam, Beauty for the Earth, Beauty for a Cure, etc.).
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Guest Care

  • Ensure Aveda Rituals are performed on guests: Sensory Journeys, Stress Relief Ritual, Finishing Touch, Blue Oil Handshake, etc.
  • Identify and resolve guest issues and/or requests in an efficient and timely manner.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the actions, values, and behaviors that constitute a strong guest care culture.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.

Minimum Requirements:

  • High School diploma.
  • Cosmetology Instructor license.
  • Must maintain current instructor’s license; this includes maintaining continuing education requirements.
  • Strong organizational skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to provide excellent presentations.
  • Demonstrated ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment.
  • Willing to work a flexible schedule; including evenings and weekends.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills; articulate in English.

Physical demands:
While performing the duties of this job, the team member is required to walk; stand for up to eight (8) hours at a time; sit; use hands to handle objects; reach with hands and arms; balance, stoop, talk and hear. Work environment:
